Pauls' Island of Blood review Empty Pauls' Island of Blood review

I was lucky enough to get my hands on the new Fantasy box set from GW today an I thought I would share my thoughts with the club.

First Impressions. Pretty good! It's a nice hefty box packed with goodies. You get the Rule Book (full rules - they've just cut out the gaming and painting goblin trash from the £45.00 one) 70 plus models, a set of dice and even a set of the old style templates. Value for money wise it is excellent! I'm a bit of a GW basher when it comes to prices but for £60 you get very good value.

Rules. The Rule book is full colour and looks very nice. I haven't had a chance to play 8th edition yet so time will see how it plays out. You also get an introduction booklet which is pretty much redundant for anyone that has played a GW game before.

Models: The old Battle for Skull Pass box set used to have some pretty sub-standard models in it but GW have obviously learnt thier lesson as the Skaven and Elf models in this set are superb. If anything they are better than some of the normal plastic box sets, particularly the rat ogres and elf general on griffon. I put together a few clan rats and they were pretty free of flash and very fast and easy to assemble. I'm planning to dip them so putting an army together should be pretty quick.

Overall: If you want to start 8th edition Fantasy and fancy a skaven or elf army this is a no-brainer. If you just want the rule book you are probably better picking one up on Ebay for a tenner. If you want to introduce a youngster to wargaming this is just about the best thing you could get.

Brilliant review Paul!

One questions about the models, with the miniatures of Assault on Black Reach they were very standard and left little room for customization and versatility; is it the same with this box set?

The models are not really multi-pose like the normal box sets. The skaven for instance are two piece - a body wih moulded shield and a weapon arm. However there is a big variety of bodies and different arms so they do look like a rabble rather than a block of identical troops. The units include champions standard bearers etc. so there is plenty of variety. I would say customising them is pretty much not possible as bodies, heads, shield etc. are all in one but then fantasy doesn't have so many options for troops anyway so it shouldn't be a problem. Also some of the joins on the bigger models are very cleverly disguised although I did fill some tiny gaps with green stuff on the rat ogres (I'm pretty anal like that...)

I should have my first ten clan rats finished today so I'll post up some pics.

When I saw the elf miniatures I almost thought about starting Fantasy. They really look like their best first box set so far.

The elves are really nice! The mage is standing on A "hollow water ball type thIngie!" The griffon is awesome - very dynamic and life like. I got the set for the skaven but now I'm going to paint up the elves for my nephew as well.

One other handy thing is a lot of people are selling thier excess stuff from the box sets on Ebay at the moment so you can fill out an army quite cheaply.
