Re: New to 40k but keen to get started
yes i have seen some of the rumors but in all honesty untill the dex gets nearer to release i dont hold much faith in any of it GW are gonna have to do a lot in order to make the new 'dex good there first task if they choose to accept it is not let cruddace write the damn thing, he really slaughtered it IMHO.
Right as for my "advice/opinions" here we go.
your goal is 1500 points right?
the flyrant...... a good enough beastie but wanting to field two at 1500 is a BIG points sink imo take one and see how it fairs because one FMC is enough to make anyone worry as they'll be hitting it on sixes unless they have the "skyfire" rule i believe (someone correct me if im wrong)
if you want a cheap nasty HQ use a prime with a D.spitter and either Dual boneswords or Lash whip bone sword (Everyone loves these guys......the further away the better lol)
Termagants.....these are Amazing if im honest ok their range isnt great but essentially they are all armed with bolt pistols whats not to like or you could make them scary put 15 of them armed with devourers in a spore and drop them somewhere and unleash a hail of 45 S4 no ap death
you say you have hive guard....use them end of, no more discussion, these guys are king of ignoring cover saves
tervigons once again a great choice for every group of termagants you include you can have one of these beasts as a TROOP... a monstrous creature that is a TROOP choice how can that not be good
and the mawloc ah the mawloc i like it.....on paper but unfortunately for me id rather take a trygon i find that if it gets tied up in combat its not gonna be that useful although it has a really nice special rule it doesnt omit the fact that the trygon is better although about 30 points more
but as i say i am very opinionated when it comes to these lovely critters and these are just my opinions on what you have mentioned so you should by no means listen to me in anyway..... play them how you want to play them and you will prolly have better luck than me but as long as you have fun when you are kicking your opponents butt or having your butt kicked by said opponent then all is well

Re: New to 40k but keen to get started
If you hit a FMC (just hit not wound) then it falls out the sky and take a hit from the fall, then I think everyone can shoot at it normal till it takes off again but I am not 100% on that last bit
I think the trick with nids is to tie up the opponent with the fast moving little bleeders and the big boys can waddle over and play without getting shot to much

Re: New to 40k but keen to get started
Yes if a unit hits the fmc hit has to roll a d6 and a roll of 1 or 2 it falls out of the sky with a thud. But it's interesting as it sez unit not modals so i presume no matter how many madals get a hit it only rolls a single d6 to see if it falls
