Thrudball 2012 11th-12th August
Guys,
By tomoz I will have the Thrudball website updated...
Who's coming (playing)? so I can reserve your space...approx 22 interested ALREADY according to TFF.
Gaz and Angel aren't as their dad's getting (Re? )married ...
Mike's a definate, I believe...
Charlie will be running Warbunka Store, offering a 10% discount voucher to Thrudballers and donating a Bloodbowl team and 10% of any takings at thrudball....
Who else? The auction is always worth a peruse...plus if I get help from BRGANs I might be convinced to do some "cabaret" (one of my alternative lyrics songs perhaps...)
Ben Day is trying to source Sumo Suits as evening entertainment not-for-profit (i.e. at supplier's cost price) or possibly even free...
Need loads of help, if anyone can assit either over the weekend either day or in organising / sourcing donations / acting as official Thrudball Photographer or Videocameraman / mopping my brow...would REALLy be appreciated.
It's gonna be Thrudtastic!!!
Frank

Re: Thrudball 2012 11th-12th August
I'll be there Frank
You know if the French lads are coming? I need to email them to see if they want to stay at mine as per usual if so.
I see I got a bit shafted with the scoring system last year finishing below ppl who had worse records. Will have to see if I can get more bonus points than I managed last year.
I had 4 wins and 2 losses the same as Hastings who came 5th and Wightlord who came 9th, I was 18th, not very Vamp friendly! Got shafted for the same reason at the Dungeonbowl at the weekend:
If there is anything I can help with on the day that doesn't involve me making a tit of myself then let me know. On the Saturday evening I'm going to be content playing other board games though like last year.

Re: Thrudball 2012 11th-12th August
I emailed Gerson, Goran and Arnaud monday 12/3 as I heard they are coming through TFF, but they've not confirmed yet.
I will be honest, personally I much prefer tournaments who reward people playing higher risk strategies, so you can lose 1 and draw two and then give three thrashings out and beat lower risk strategies.
Admittedly I don't often rank highly in tournament rankings(6th at Newquaybowl last year though, would have been higher if Val hadn't have drew 3-3 in turn 8 2nd half to win the tourney), but to me it can actually be more sporting, and definately more fun, to risk losing a game and give my opponent the opportunity of turning a match around...also I'm too arrogant, playing too competitively brings out the scouser in me...
To me there is nothing more miserable than strangling the life out of a game by clinging onto a boring 1-0 or even 2-0 win...but I suppose if you want silverware you've got to take bloodbowl seriously...
I suppose if I was more competitive (and better at bloodbowl) then I'd see the logic in win-at-all-costs, but with the best will in the world 90% of us will have at least 1 match at every tournament we go to where our dice just say "NOOOoooo" whatever we try. Hence logically even careful good players are frustrated by luck just as much with tournament scoring systems weighing the win over bonus points. By weighting more emphasis on bonus points over wins, players are tempted to still try to score even when a 2-0 win is in the bag, perhaps giving their opponent a small chance at redemption or consolation(or revenge ). By comparison safe bloodbowl sucks major rooster (especially for the player forced to do the sucking...)
You do have more tourney experience than me though...look, how about next year you help review the ruleset and see if we can even up the scoring?

oh, and your entry number is 27, dook...help checking team sheets would be appreciated (means you've got to be there early on saturday though)
Re: Thrudball 2012 11th-12th August
I agree with your sentiments but in reality I don't think it works
most teams can still play to grind out and get good points 2-1 win with 3 points for cas
the rules have changed to make more races more competitive (which I approve as it gives a greater variety in opposition) and while it does mean they've more change of winning each individual game, some races are still favoured
also a low scoreline doesn't necessarily reflect teams playing "boring", also playing higher risk strategies can lead to low scoring games as well (going all out to stop the other team scoring instead of letting them score quick and going for a 2-1 grind)
by weighting the bonus points it favours some races over others (there was a similar issue with GW using TDs and ignoring CAS as a decider weighting points towards Woodies and Skaven)
however I'm yet to really think of a system that doesn't have some weighting towards certain races, I just know with Vampires getting a lot of cas is highly unlikely and "sporting" play does tend to result in a low scoring match with them due to their playstyle
the first thought I had was perhaps implementing some strength of opponent bonus into the scoring system as well, though would take some work
*******************
on an aside if the french guys are coming and staying with me, not sure getting there that early on the saturday will be that easy, out late friday, then all of us showering etc
other ways to combat that, would be to get the opponent to check the rosters at the start of game 1 and allow an extra 5-10 mins
perhaps offer a single bonus point for anyone who submits a roster in a week early via email?

Re: Thrudball 2012 11th-12th August
...like an underdog bonus in necromunda? If so it kind of suggests team ratings aren't correct...
Re: Thrudball 2012 11th-12th August
well that's true by design, jervis statement in the rulebook even says that
it is also backed up by the fact the thrudball rules let different races skill up different numbers of players
can talk about it more on the way to nottingham if you like, will take a long write up to explain my thoughts on here, rather not detract from the thread too much and its something I'd rather post on the NAF site as it isn't specific to thrudball only

August? I'm free, granted could make myself the dreaded "Player Thwacker." At college and don the Assistant Ref shirt BRGA shirt and skirmish about if need be.

Martin,
Garry's already offered to do the tin (wellhe is training to be an accountant), but I would really appreciate a couple of assistant refs to make everything run smoothly...do youfancy running ourKing Queen of Sumo event? Will run between rounds on the day and straight after the aucton...people will need help getting in and out the sumo suits...so ideally need a team of two.
Also Martin are you available at all on saturday with your purple shirt?
I'm collecting in Bognor Town Centre from 10am-4pm, and could do with any help I can get...
the more pot holders we have, the more we'll raise this year...
Good to hear from you, not seen you for AGES, thought Perhaps Mike Jupps dog had eaten you...
