40k tournament 2014
hi chaps.
i thought i would run this idea by you all as i thought it would be a good tradition.
poor old Chris is a bit fed up of organizing events all the time and that is understandable.
so i thought the winner of an event should organize the next one and as i won the last one i should do the 2014 tournament.
this way no one person can win two tournaments in a row and no one person will have to organize more than one in a row.
ideally i would look to do it on a Saturday and have 2 people to help with rules questions and posably stand in to play if someone drops out at the last minute and we have odd numbers.
i was thinking £10 a ticket to cover the cost of the hall for the day, trophy's and the rest can go to club for new terrain and such.
i have other ideas but i will cover them once i have some feed back.
let me know what you chaps think.

Agree with the winner organises the next one, good way to do it so that it's not just one person that organises it.
Regarding Saturday tournaments, if we're talking about proper one-off tourneys, yes, good idea, good way to get some revenue for the club.
If we're talking about replacing the tourneys we've done at the club so far by this, not so good. I personally can't get Saturdays off. Tuesday eve is my hobby evening (or any week day if planned in advance tbh). I like having games planned like we've done so far. It's not a "proper" tournament, but it's the best way we have to play games a bit competitively at the moment. Organising leagues, campaigns would be awesome too.

Re: 40k tournament 2014
this setup might not be convenient for every one as i know people have to work, family commitments or a life so long as enough people can make it then it is worth a go.
we can still do the current format if enough people wish but i feel something that take so long you are better off trying to do a campaign not a tournament.
as for the one day tournament setup i was thinking we could make it a bit more interesting by pitching imperial vs chaos forces mainly and having the Orks, Eldar, Tau and Nids as wiled cards. this should give it a little bit of narrative but also allow players to be pitched against players of equal skill. but would depend on numbers.
there would be bonus points up for grabs for things like getting your list in for checking in time, painted mins, and wysiwyg.
also i would like to do a small prize for best painted as an incentive to get people to paint there armies.
we get out as much as we put into the hobby.

As somebody that has run half the tourneys at club it is very hard to run them over time if this last one could have run quicker we would have had less drop outs. I can still run club nite ones but to move foreword we need tournament days like other clubs so we can grow

Re: 40k tournament 2014
I got to say I really enjoy the old one day events.
A lot of the current tournaments are a 2 day event and for me with a family I just can’t commit to that and I know others have weekend jobs and that to boot.
A wile yet before anything is planned for sure but it would be nice to get an idea of how many people would be interested in playing and others for helping out.

Re: 40k tournament 2014
I'm going to have a little rant now, so I'll apologise in advance, then probably upset some of you...perhaps.
Elvis is right, people's lack of commitment to tournaments is a major issue and obstacle... I was really surprised after all Chris's hard work at the club on making better scenery and boards and then organising the inter club event that James got a Bye to the FINAL because his opponents couldn't find the time to play him...even I was disappointed to learn this.
I spoke to Chris and this isn't the reason he is taking a break, he just wants to get the complete Gaming experience (every model nicely painted , great scenery, the works) but I could understand if he also felt his efforts weren't matched by all of his fellow BRGANS...
Until you've gone through then hardship of organising a tourney, you cannot fully appreciate all the effort that is involved, particularly if you also have to chase people to play matches. We're all adults, and if we make a commitment to something it's simple good manners to be as good as our word. If I had to miss a tourney due to unforeseen circumstances, I'd organise a stand-in to play my game if my opponent agreed, or else forfeit, rather than keep requesting rearranged dates...
I've taken this on board with the Chaos Cup by running it as a Straight Knock-Out contest ONLY on Tuesdays in October, but with a sneaky Chaos Twist...allowing defeated coaches to STEAL the place of their vanquisher if the vanquished coach shows up but the vanquisher doesn't turn up the following week... plus only drawing rounds based on who turns up on the day...If you're a no-show by 7:30pm, "toughshitskis", you're OUT...
I'm determined to run this in the five Tuesdays on October, but regrettably I know quite a few of you simply will not be able to commit to club every Tuesday in October, so we may well still see a LOT of byes to subsequent rounds.
In summary Alex I'd recommend a Higher Entry fee to ensure commitment, LESS time if any to rearrange battles and full onus / responsibility on the person / people supposed to play the battle to get it done AND provide the Tournament Organiser with results.
Rant Over, feel better now...

Re: 40k tournament 2014
Good to get that off your chest I bet.
I am only interested in doing a one day tournament on Saturday or Sunday for the reasons you put above. The other ones are just to longwinded to try and run and lots of snags keep creeping up. Keep it quick, simple and fun is the motto for this.
I will leave the price at £10 for the moment as I don’t want to put people off with the cost but taking into account it is about £40 for the hall + maybe another £20 for the prices? We need 6 people just to break even.
Need to find out how Meany tables we have to know how many people we can have. If we can have 6 tables then that is 12 players and £120 with £60 going to the club for new terrain and such. If we have more then all the better.
Might talk to you about it a bit to night frank

Agree with Frank and Elvis. For now, I personally can do Saturdays and Sundays (the latter being slightly easier) provided I have at least a month's notice in advance.

Re: 40k tournament 2014
Ok so the plan is
Date TBC (but in June July unless it clashes really badly with another event.)
Cost £10 (money up front at least a month before the event and no refunds)
Number of players: TBC
Points: 1000 points list. (this is so we can get a good 4 round of games in and also means people have to think hard about what to take.)
You are allowed allies, forge world, flyers and named characters.
You are not allowed any crazy apocalypse items or anything with strength D weapons.
Missions: TBC but will most likely consist of both objective and kill points for each mission.
Winner gets 3 points.
Losser gets 1 points.
Draw both players get 2 points.
Any draws at the end of the day are worked out on total kill points for all 4 games.
Points are also awarded for:
list in on time (month before event)
having a painted army.
having painted objective marks.
having wysiwyg (this is mainly so weapons are correct not so fussed about grenades and such.)
there will be prices for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and last place as well as best painted (voted for my the players)
Times. Everyone! gets there at 12:00 to help setup
1:00-3:00 round 1
3:30-4:30 round 2
4:30-6:30 round 3
6:30-7:30 brake to eat
7:30-9:30 round 4
9:30-10:30 prices announced, pats on back and tidy up
I will also need 2 or so volunteers to help out with rules queries to keep things going smoothly as well possibly standing in the event someone drops out at the last moment.
Volunteers don’t play the £10 even if they get to play but can if they want
Let others know the score and let’s see if we can get some interest in this

Re: 40k tournament 2014
Hi chaps.
I would really like an idea of numbers so if people are interested or know people who are then please post on here ideally with if a Saturday or Sunday is best for you.
Next up. I will change the painting judging to be done by the Judges who help me out on the day.
This is because with only an hour break for lunch people might well not have the opportunity to cast a vote so I felt it would be easier for the judges to have a look around as people play and they are helping with rule queries, then we can put our heads together during the brake and decide on a winner.
I have a couple of fun missions in mind both use kill points and objectives so create a list accordingly.
I know it is a while off but I also know it can take a while to get people’s responses and it gives people plenty of time to paint up a 1000 points worth of army not to mention allowing time for the next few codex to be released.
on the subject of painting I will point out there is 3 points in all related to having a painted force and objectives and that is equivalent to having won a game. Games look and feel much better for using painted miniatures and this is one reason why I am driving this option home, they don’t have to be golden daemon quality to count as painted
